Hi there!

I made this WordPress blog as a place to put stuff from time to time. Hopefully you will find something you like. Comments, suggestions, etc. are welcome, but replies may be delayed as I only check the e-mail account they land in every week or so. Diana’s work is never done…

Greetings, happy Zoners! Just now I have a moment to spare and a bee in my bonnet: In light of the latest adventure of an Aussie hacker kid called Mendax, the album Diplomatic Immunity from Australian outfit Client Liaison seems super apropos right now.

The first track is called Canberra Won’t Be Calling Tonight: A turn of phrase that could be a real-life headline in a “serious” newspaper somewhere in the UK tomorrow. I call Client Liaison’s style impeccably produced EDM with large synthpop and disco influences, and some big nods to Warren Zevon (thematic) and Steely Dan (stylistic). That makes a unique combination, and it really works for me.

BTW, Google’s YouTube will NOT play the title track to U.S. audiences, at least not me – I tried, but “not available in your country”. So here’s the album:

I don’t recall seeing Warren Zevon in the Zone lately, so having mentioned him I should drop at least this: An official compilation including demos that sometimes overshadow his familiar studio releases, IMO.

Procol Harum’s very popular A Whiter Shade of Pale gave lots of people their first dose of J.S. Bach, and introduced a durable enigma: What the hell do the lyrics mean?

I knew at once that the Miller’s Tale in Chauncer provided an essential clue: But lacking the verses omitted from the recorded version of the song, untangling the lyrics allowed bugger all chance of solution, as our UK friends would say.

A while back I ran across a recording of a live performance by Procol Harum that includes all the verses of A Whiter Shade of Pale. Not a spoiler: The female protagonist was an RN sailor in the submarine service, home on shore leave. The hidden meaning? Listen and learn – released and live verions included here as bonus tracks with Shine On Brightly:

Here’s three recent albums from obscure (?) artists that I happen to like a very much lot. They fall somewhere on the synthpop / dreampop / avant garde spectrum. Each stands out as unique in its own way.

Low Sea – Remote Viewing – 2013

This album from Boznian due Billie and Bobby D takes me straight back to my “coffee house” days, when a hole in the wall called Harold & Maude’s was my alternate living room in the late 80s. I know the people whose stories it tells very well, because I was one of them. Almost 30 years on, proof that some things – the same all over the world – never change.

Imaginary Cities – Fall of Romance – 2013

There must have been something in the air six years ago, because as different as it may be from the above, Fall of Romance hits me in the same places as Low Sea. Incorrectly classified as “Jazz” becuase driving force Chris Potter does play a mean sax, I tagged this one as Power Pop and Shoegaze when I archived it. Fall of Romance almost stands alone among similar efforts for depth and texture. Your mileage may vary, give it a spin and find out.

Lanu – The Double Sunrise – 2016

Coming in just under the wire of permissible publication dates, Lance Ferguson, Megan Washington and Melanie Pain blend themes and sounds from Exotica and Power Pop into something completely original and not to be missed: Some the prettiest music I have heard in a loooong time.
